Animated artwork using Unreal Engine, AKVIS Sketch, and Photoshop. (Image: Peter von Stackelberg)

I continue to be amazed at the technology that is being developed for visual storytelling. The latest surprise is EbSynth. It makes the job of converting video into painting-like animations. The best part…it’s free! I’ll post some video examples that I did in an afternoon while learning the software.

This video sequence was created with:

  • Unreal Engine’s MetaHuman Creator — used to create a customize human character in just one to two hours. The animation is an automated test sequence MetaHuman Creator runs through to help verify facial expressions are working correctly.
  • After Effects to convert the video file to a sequence of .PNG images. Photoshop can also be used to do this.
  • AKVIS Sketch to do the pencil-like drawing; AKVIS ArtWork to do the paint-like artwork.
  • EbSynth to take a single key frame and convert 1000 frames into the artwork.
  • After Effects or Photoshop to import the 1000 frame image sequence and convert it into a .MPG format video clip.

The process involves a relatively small number of steps and is quite easy one you figure out the right workflow.
